Homeowners in the Durham Region looking to lower their utility bills and explore sustainable living have a major opportunity coming this spring. On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the region will host its free Home Energy Expo and Electric Vehicle (EV) showcase. Held at the Durham Headquarters in Whitby, the event is designed to provide residents with a “fact-based” roadmap for home electrification, covering everything from modern heat pumps to rooftop solar installations.

Navigating Rebates and Retrofits

The primary goal of the Home Energy Expo is to simplify the often-confusing world of energy efficiency. Many residents are unaware of the various financial supports available for upgrading their properties. During the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., attendees can access:

Electrifying Transportation in Durham

In addition to home upgrades, the Home Energy Expo will place a heavy emphasis on the transition to electric transportation. As charging infrastructure continues to expand across the Durham Region, the event will offer residents a chance to get behind the wheel. EV experts will be on-site to facilitate test drives and answer technical questions about battery life, cold-weather performance, and at-home charging station installations.

Durham Region Chair John Henry emphasized the importance of this community-focused approach. “By sharing practical information and real‑life experiences, we can help ensure all residents feel confident taking steps that save money and reduce emissions,” Henry stated.

A Cleaner, More Resilient Future

Ian McVey, the region’s Environment & Climate Director, noted that the Home Energy Expo is about “meeting residents where they are.” As energy costs continue to fluctuate, shifting toward electricity-powered homes and vehicles is seen as a vital strategy for building a more resilient local economy. The expo serves as a one-stop shop where technology and practical guidance meet to help families make informed decisions that benefit their budgets.

Residents interested in attending can find more details and pre-registration information at durham.ca/HomeEnergyandEVExpo. Whether you are ready to install a heat pump this summer or are simply curious about how an EV would handle a commute on the 401, the Home Energy Expo offers the localized expertise needed to navigate the transition to a greener Durham.
